The College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBS&H), Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, extended a warm welcome to its newly admitted students through a grand cultural event titled Jashn-e-taruf, organized under the aegis of the SAASCA on September 24, 2025. The celebration was designed to introduce freshers to the vibrant academic and cultural life of the college, while also providing them a platform to express their talents.
The occasion was graced by Principal Inderjit Kaur, the Mayor of Ludhiana, as the Chief Guest of the day, while Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice Chancellor, PAU, presided over the event. Dr Rishipal Singh (IAS), Registrar, PAU, and Dr Nirmal Singh Jaura, Director Student Welfare, PAU, were the Guests of Honour. The programme commenced with a floral welcome of the Chief Guest by Dr Kiran Bains, Dean of COBS&H and President of SAASCA.
A minute of silence was solemnly observed in remembrance of the flood victims of Punjab, exemplifying the institution’s commitment to social responsibility and empathetic engagement with contemporary societal issues. The function proceeded further after invoking the blessings of the Almighty. Dr Shalini Sharma, Secretary of SAASCA, presented an overview of SAASCA’s activities and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering holistic student development. A poster reveal symbolizing the association’s vision for the session marked the beginning of a colourful cultural programme.
The afternoon witnessed a blend of traditional and modern performances, including classical and western dances, a melodious group song, a comic bhand, and a comical yet emotive skit. The highlight of Jashn-e-taruf was the Mr. & Ms Fresher Contest, featuring a ramp walk and an engaging question-answer round that showcased the confidence and creativity of the newcomers. Mr Manveer Sandhu, a student of the School of Business Studies and Ms Muskaan Narula, a student of the Department of Agricultural Journalism, Languages and Culture (AJLC), were crowned Mr and Ms Fresher respectively. The titles were conferred under the expert and discerning judgment of Dr Neena Singla, Research Coordinator, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities; Dr Deepika Vig, Research Coordinator, College of Community Science; and Dr Surbhi Mahajan, Assistant Professor, COCS and Co-coordinator IQAC. Their valuable insights and experience ensured a fair and commendable selection process.
In her address, the Dean, COBS&H, applauded the enthusiasm of students and the faculty and emphasized that such cultural engagements nurture leadership, teamwork and self-expression. The prize distribution ceremony recognized the outstanding contributions and achievements of students in various fields.
The Chief Guest, Principal Inderjit Kaur, the Mayor of Ludhiana, in her remarks, commended SAASCA for organizing a memorable welcome function and urged students to embrace both academic rigour and extracurricular excellence. She highlighted that platforms like Jashn-e-Taruf help strengthen camaraderie, cultural pride, and personal growth among students. She praised PAU as an epitome of learning, innovation, and service to the nation, owing to its legacy of the Green Revolution and ongoing pioneering research in agriculture and agricultural practices, which has transformed it from just a university into a movement of knowledge and progress. She encouraged students to face the challenges of the future bravely, guided by capable teachers and the vision of the Vice Chancellor.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr Manpreet Kaur, followed by a spirited Bhangra performance that filled the auditorium with energy and joy. Dr Priya Katyal, coordinated the stage.
Jashn-e-Taruf not only marked the beginning of a new academic journey for the freshers but also celebrated the vibrant legacy of COBS&H in promoting culture, creativity and community spirit. |
